Guatemala’s Elections

The presidential elections for the nation of Guatemala are coming up in a couple of months. However, the leading options aren’t ideal. The article states that “all three are mired in controversy and legal battles that could exclude them from the ballot.” The first two options seem substantial, however the third major candidate is supposedly the daughter of an ex-dictator who was involved in genocide. I think that having the top presidential candidates involved in corruption is just asking for trouble in the future. It is important to vote for leader that is going to help the country grow as a whole and not just look out for individual benefit. It is very dangerous having a corrupt leader and could lead to unwanted situations. One of the three major candidates recently had a warrant for her arrest. I hope that these conditions deter voters, but I know that not every country has perfect elections, there are always going to be aspects that get in the way. Not even the US is able to hold flawless elections. We actually had similar issues with drama in the last presidential elections with Hillary Clinton. So obviously, no one is immune to corruption and drama. It is stated that Aldana prosecuted high ranking officials for corruption during her time as attorney general, but is now facing charges of embezzlement and falsification of information on public documents. All of this makes her and the other candidates seem untrustworthy and ill equipped to run a country. I find the law that once a candidate is registered they receive immunity very interesting. I do not believe that it is beneficial, because as seen here, complications arose with the chosen candidate, making her inadequate to run. However, Aldana’s candidacy was annulled, but her party Semilla is working on appealing. I think it will be very interesting to follow the rest of the election to see how it unfolds and see the extent of corruption and drama.
