A Narco tunnel was recently discovered under the Rio Grande River on August 24. The tunnel was an illegal passage crossing the border from Mexico to the United States of America. However, this has not been the only tunnel; in previous years multiple tunnels have been discovered  similar to this one.

These tunnels are believed to be obtained by Mexican drug cartels, specifically the Gulf Cartel, where they are trafficking drugs, weapons, as well as people. One end of the tunnel was found in Matamoros, Tamaulipas (Mexico), yet the tunnel was discovered on the other end located in Brownsville, TX in the United States.

Soon after Mexican authorities were alerted immediately and both ends are currently guarded. State officials and the DEA believe that the tunnel was not finished. This is not the first time something such as this has happened regarding the relationship with the United States and Mexico. Mexican drug cartels over the past many years have been trying and succeeding to find ways to smuggle drugs, weapons and people across the US and Mexican border.

While this specific tunnel may have been found, many more as we speak are being deployed by powerful drug cartels moving drugs into our borders, selling to our people. Since it was stated the tunnel was not yet finished, who knows how much farther the tunnel could’ve been built? Will there soon be underground tunnels connected throughout the US, occupied by Narco?

This also shows new ways that are being enacted by the cartel in response to Trump’s wall. The recent tunnel was discovered on the US side, which is not too surprising. Maybe this can lead one to think that the Mexican government was aware of the tunnel and that the Gulf Cartel had plans to smuggle drugs and such over the US border.

This ties to our discussion in class on the question “Why do drug cartels in countries such as Mexico have so much power? Why won’t their governments do more to stop it?” Many top Mexican drug cartels hold so much power in their country because they are able to pay local police to high political officials. This continues to be a challenging topic on how to solve the ongoing issue of stripping cartels of power and further hence an uncorrupt government.
