39,000 bodies have been left unidentified in Mexico’s morgues due to the Governments militarized crackdown on organized crime. This has overloaded the morgues which are unequipped to handle the amount of bodies brought in for autopsies. 27,271, 70% of the total, bodies left the morgue unidentified, and put down into common graves. Many of these bodies have just been given to medical schools, which has created the issue of students learning on bodies that are still being searched for by families. This problem has spiraled out of control leaving local authorities to create makeshift solutions, such that led to a trailer of decomposing bodies being left in a suburban neighborhood in Guadalajara, which was discovered due to the stench, back in 2018. This is not only tragic for the families of those who have died and never receive closure, but also for the country itself, who’s “forensic crisis has transformed the Mexican State into a burying machine.” This crisis has unfortunately only grown over the years and if something serious doesn’t change in the mexican government, it seems that the war on drugs will only rage on, as the bodies continue to stack up.
