Storm Eta, a category 4 hurricane, hit Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala, and is currently projected by the U.S National Hurricane Center to hit the Caribbean Sea, Cuba and Florida.

The effects of hurricanes such as Storm Eta, leave LDCs for instance, these South American countries, poverty-ridden, who look to the international community for help. A state of emergency has been called with 50 people having been confirmed dead in the country of Guatemala. On top of that, 100 are feared dead in the central region of Alta Verapaz says President Alejandro Giammattei.

In a small village located in Guatemala, dozens of houses are buried from mudslides that were triggered by the heavy rainfall during Storm Eta. Next door to Guatemala, Honduras is not much different. Hundreds of people wait on their rooftops to be saved from the neck-deep water that encompasses their villages.

“We have nothing.. I am in pain”, is only one of the many calls for help from the victims of Storm Eta. Storm Eta is a prime example of the on-going climate crisis that is not only affecting animals and habitat, but humans as well. While more developed countries such as the U.S might be able to recover from such occurances, it could take countries such as Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua many years to get back to where they once were, due to the lack of money and resources. The rush to solve the climate crisis should not only be for saving our environment, but also ourselves, which is what many people seem to loose sight of.

This article directly connects to International Relations, because it is MDCs’ responsibility to take forth action in helping these countries towards a speedy recovery. Hurricanes, mudslides, floods, and other types of extreme weather are also global issues.

Organizations such as the UN and EU work together to tackle the worsening issue of climate change and is a topic of disscusion around the world. However, the issue of global warming is an example under the collective goods problem in which the solution to climate change is particularly difficult to solve regarding International Affairs.
