Authorities rescue 39 enslaved workers from an illegal Brazilian gold mine run by Raimunda Oliveira Nunes, who is on Brazil’s ‘dirty list’ of people using slave labor. The team that raided the mine said workers lived in open sheds and without drinking water. This was the third raid on grounds run by Oliveira Nunes.
The Thomson Reuters Foundation and the inspector’s office could not find contact to receive a comment from Nunes. Nunes was found guilty of enslaving workers in 2018 and received a sentence of five years in prison, but she has not been jailed and is appealing the ruling, and on top of that the ‘dirty list’ has no legal consequences.
Brazils ‘dirty list’ was created to keep business owners from profiting off slavery. About 370,000 people in Brazil are sucked into modern-day slavery. Slavery is a huge problem in brazil especially when these operations are run by really wealthy, powerful people. Slavery affects these people’s rights and economic status. It also takes a toll on these workers surrounding debt bondage, degrading work conditions, long hours that could reflect health risks.
