This article highlights Perus departure from Lima and the effect that has on Venezuela and other nearby countries. A number of Latin American countries joined a group called Lima, Lima was founded specifically to return stability and peace to the people and region of Venezuela after Nicolas Maduro became a Authoritarian leader. Lima did this through trade boycotts and blockading. With Peru leaving this just weakens Lima, Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina, and Saint Lucia have already left the group and some have even opened up discourse with Venezuela completely flipping their standpoint from what it previously was. The article points out how Lima has very few options left to pressure Nicolas Maduro and disrupt his hold over Venezuela.
These revelations are significant because it shows a change in the region’s views on Venezuela’s Authoritarian government. Many democracies are already showing signs of sliding into Authoritarianism in South America. And this change in Lima could also inspire other Presidents such as Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil to the same thing. With corruption and political subterfuge already so prevalent in that region, Preus’ departure from Lima could signal a turning point for other countries to leave as well and have Nicolas Maduro be in charge of Venezuela without repercussions. This is most prominently affecting the people of Venezuela who have been dealing with political instability and crisis for years at this point seemingly without end. Nicolas Maduro has been ruling the country with an iron fist, by locking up political rivals, incarcerating people who speak out against him, and forcing influential politicians to leave the country. Peru had originally wanted to provide political stability and force Nicolas Maduro to return democracy to the region. However after Lima’s failed attempts at political pressure Peru has offered to open relations with Venezuela again. This leaves the future of the people of Venezuela uncertain and bleak with Nicolas Maduro seemingly going to remain in power indefinitely.
