Covid-19 has ravaged Brazil and with this many citizens have decided to flee to the north, to the US. As many fled to the US one significant person that fled was Chelbe Moraes. Moraes was arrested at the border, and it was soon discovered that he was a veteran people smuggler. He was charged on multiple counts and was also accused of having brazilians pay $20,000 just to get into the US. Moraes’ very corrupt network runs internationally and includes corrupt cops, officials, and families. Even though the charges and the evidence against him Moraes pleads not guilty. Moraes says that his work that he has done is a legitimate consultancy business and is only so expensive because he “knows american laws”. The amount of refugees coming from Brazil to the US is at its highest-43,280.

I think that this article, though it doesn’t seem like it shows a lot of international relations information, shows quite of intel. Just this year the number of refugees that came from Brazil is over double that amount in 2019. With covid countries have had to help with new challenges and try to solve them. It seems like the US is doing good in the case it’s getting semi back to normal. Though due to how our immigration process is, people think that rather than doing the legal thing, it would be easier to break the law to have a better life. That is why they go to people like Moraes, all the people want is a better life in a place that seems like they are controlling the pandemic better then some.

This relates to class because the US and Brazil are founding members of the UN. This also relates to the common good problem, more of the 3rd solution we talked about in class. The solution talked about all countries sacrificing something and everyone living in harmony. Well if that were to happen and open borders were implemented then this issue would never have had to happen in the first place. Also the human rights aspect of the common good problem because, yes the US wants to help the brazilians but due to the fact they got to the country by smuggling. The US now wont help because they broke the law.
