Bosnia-Herzegovina has recently gone through a horrific war that was between the republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1995. The war that was eventually ended through a U.S. made treaty has started to gain more and more tenuous over the years. The Dayton agreement that was made by the U.S. split the two ethnicities in the country, thus, ending the war of 1995. The people that suffered most from the tragic war have started to threaten seceding from the country. The CNN reporter says “In a country where ethnic divisions between Serbs, Bosniaks and Croats led to war crimes being committed in recent history, this level of tension is making observers very nervous.”
After the genocide of the hundreds of muslim boys in the country of Bosnia, they have more then the right to threaten to secede from their country. The impact that another conflict of the same measure of the war of 1995 would be felt outside the borders. The involvement of the U.S. is being questioned due to their past involvement in the settlement of the past war. Involvement at this point may be futile due to their late presence and conflict may be inevitable. On the other hand, if the U.S. were to get involved it may assist in the dismantling of tension and lessen the inevitable damage. Any escalation of violence in Bosnia could harm them tremendously as they cannot afford a Russia-backed conflict, entangled with Chinese and other interests, on NATO’s borders.
This relates to class because of the ongoing fight of power to be a bi-polar power in the world as talked about in class. The Russian or Chinese involvement in the conflict may end up making the U.S. become less of an overreaching power in Eastern affairs. The U.S. could be affected greatly by this conflict and make Chinese or Russian countries more powerful.
