There were flash floods and landslides in the Brazilian city of Petropolis. The city looks like it has been through war according to the president Jair Bolsonaro. The death toll rises as rescue workers and residents dig through the rubble. The death toll has risen to 165, which includes at least 28 children. The recent storms also forced more than 1,200 people to evacuate their homes and destroyed 43 people’s houses. In the past three months, at least 219 people have died in severe rainstorms. There have been major clean up operations as mud and debris clog the streets.

Because this storm caused so much damage to the city, there will definitely be big economic effects. They had to get sanitation workers from other cities, and many roads are blocked from building debris, cars, and mud. There are also many people whose homes were destroyed or damaged, so they need to find a place to live. This storm as well as other storms in the area are a result of climate change. This shows us the sad reality of climate change and how we have an increased amount of tropical storms and flooding from the storms. This will not get better unless we make countries prioritize climate change efforts which will help with sustainability and countries economies.

Natural disasters such as this one are a result of climate change. Though the effects of Climate change are more evident in some places more than others, it is one of the pressing global issues. Climate change is a big problem and can not be solved by one country alone, so countries need to work together. There are big international organizations such as the UN that work to help in natural disaster relief. International organizations are what allow multiple countries to cooperate because of reciprocity. We can see that more countries and international organizations are becoming more environmentally conscious, but we have to take more strides as countries near the equator such as Brazil will continue to have natural disasters.
