Femicide is an epidemic that is occurring all across Argentina. Femicide is the killing of females due to their gender. It is estimated that a woman dies from femicide every thirty hours in Argentina. One family whose daughter died in 2016 in a case of femicide is still seeking justice and action from the government. The men who killed their daughter were only charged with giving drugs to a minor. This is due to the fact that the court system of Argentina is usually very sexist in their ruling towards women. The death of this family’s daughter led to a women’s strike in 2016 with hundreds of thousands of people protesting the unfair rulings of Argentina courts.
This epidemic of femicide occurring in Argentina is a clear example of the unjust legal system in Argentina. For most of the cases involving femicide the men are ruled as innocent or charged on lesser charges. This will most likely not change anytime soon as the mistreatment of women has been going on for the entire history of Argentina. There are hopes that events such as the women’s marches will have an effect but so far they have not created any large changes to the Argentine legal system. There will likely be no meaningful changes unless the international community as a whole involves themselves.
The femicide ongoing in Argentina is a humanitarian crisis. With an estimated one woman dying every 30 hours from femicide it is an epidemic that must be stopped. The United Nations might eventually have to intervene to help save the lives of Argentine citizens. This help from the international community may be in the form of other rallies and marches such as the first march for women’s rights in Argentina after the death of Lucia in 2016. It also could be in the form of sanctions against Argentina until they fix their legal system to no longer be sexiest towards women.
