This article talks about how last weekend, April 16th Jamaica has now ended COVID-19 testing requirement in this very popular Caribbean destination for vacation. The relaxed restrictions were put in place just two days after Jamaican health officials announced the changes. According to its official tourism site, the country “will no longer have any travel restrictions that were imposed due to the pandemic.” This now means that the only real requirement for visitors looking to go to Jamaica is immigration and custom documents. The only problem that would still not be solved is for American visitors that are traveling back home as there is still testing for citizens that are reentering the country.

This is important because with these restrictions being lifted off there will be a spike in the amount of tourists that come to visit Jamaica. With Jamaica rolling back on masks and traveling restrictions it hopes that easier entry will attract more tourists. During 2019-2021, Jamaica was facing serious declines in contribution for the economy with coronavirus as many jobs and the overall economy depends on tourism. Jamaica’s economy relies heavily on tourism which has become one of the country’s largest sources of foreign exchange with over 22.4% of its overall GDP being things that rely on tourism for Jamaica.

This relates to international relations that the overall economy of Jamaica should be going back to normal and begin to thrive again in the next year or so. Like we talked about in class in the United nation, the 8th goal was to promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth and for the past 2 years with Covid, Jamaica has actually reversed a lot of progress that they were trying to gain. For example, I found an article saying that the people of Jamaica lost over 130,000 jobs in just 120 days because of Covid.
