Numerous countries in Europe and the Americas have banned and expelled Russian diplomats from their countries in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Canada, in addition to banning Russian diplomats, has also provided large amounts of military aid to Ukraine. In response, Russia has banned almost 600 Canadians from entering Russia including the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Deputy Prime Minister. Russia claims that this was done in retaliation for “Russophobic actions” taken by Canada.

This article is important because it shows how countries often respond to political action taken against them. Many countries have been placing sanctions on Russia and taking other diplomatic measures to try and punish Russia, as well as providing large amounts of military assistance to Ukraine. Because of this, it was expected that Russia would take some kind of retaliatory action.

This story relates to class because it involves two sovereign states that have banned the diplomatic presence of the other country. These actions are as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and then the retaliation of these actions by Russia.
