Turks and Caicos Governor blames Jamaican gangs for escalating crime situation

There has been a surge in gang violence, and just violence in general in multiple Caribbean countries and territories. More specifically, there’s been a surge in gang violence in the Turks and Caicos islands, which is a British territory in the Caribbean. The governor, Nigel John Dakin blames Jamaican and other foreign crime groups for the surge. He then brings up several examples of blatant crime that’s occurred over the past year. An attempt to arrest drug dealers ended in a gun fight, and the death of a tourist. Another example was violence between gang members, and how a Haitian gang leader, who had avoided arrest 4 times before, was shot and killed by a fellow gang member. And another example, finally getting to where Jamaica gets involved, was a jamaican gang that’s been growing in power on the islands. Dakin also brought up that the majority of murders and assaults in the past year have been linked to gang violence, and has also brought up other incidents where gangs have used military grade weaponry. Dakin says he’s been working with the UK Ministry of Justice and the Jamaican Cabinet to bring this group to justice, and to gain access to UK forensic labs and experts.

Since there’s been such a surge of violent crime in the Turk and Caicos Islands, it makes sense that the Governor would want to do something. But it seems that Dakin was pretty quick to blame Jamaica on the surge in crime, especially since it seems that a Jamaican gang has only been a recent development. I think that Dakin could possibly be blaming Jamaica as a scapegoat, and trying to avoid the possible failure of keeping the territory safe. It makes sense that the UK is getting involved, since it is a British territory, and there’s no involvement from countries outside the Caribbean, so it’s a pretty local issue. I hope that the islands will turn out to be okay, I just don’t know how good of a governor Dakin is.
