During a meetup at the Vandai Club, a meeting where academics, politicians, and businessmen from a variety of countries meet up to discuss international relations and politics. During this meeting Vladimir Putin was questioned by a Brazilian representative what his stance would be towards Brazil depending on who wins the upcoming election. Putin said that he had good relations with both Lula and Bolsonaro, the two Brazilian presidential candidates. Putin went on to explain that despite difficult circumstances in the nation Russia was not going to interfere with the Brazilian election and said that Brazil is Russia’s most valuable associate in the region.
I think on a large scale this article is mostly unimportant to Nations other than Russia and Brazil. I do however find it interesting that Russia specified that they wouldn’t interfere with the Brazilian election, Russia is frequently accused of interfering with not only their own elections, which there is more than sufficient evidence for, but also others elections, there is some substantial evidence for this as well. By specifying that they won’t interfere in the election Putin is in a way admitting to or at least owning up to his poor relation with democratic elections. By saying that he is choosing not to interfere it also shows Russian power and their trust in the Brazilians, Putin knows he could interfere with the election but instead has decided he simply doesn’t need to.
Russia’s current policies are very concerned with the security dilemma, Russia has invaded Ukraine to increase their security. Western Nations surrounded the Western border of their country with NATO members, Russia’s security is significantly weaker because of this, by taking over Ukraine they are closing a natural access point to Russian land from Europe. Another policy they have that is trying to increase their security is the ones of trade they have with countries like, Brazil, Belarus, and China. It is of utmost importance that they maintain these relationships as they are some of the last people Russia is able to trade with. Putin makes it clear that he has no intention to interfere with the Election because it shows his trust in the Brazilian people and the trust they should therefore have in him.
