An estimated 472,000 Venezuelans have arrived in America, and the Biden administration has issued them temporary legal status in order for them to be able to work. There have been two starkly different responses to this; Democrats are pleased, as they have been pushing for more aid to be given to those seeking asylum. Republicans on the other hand, are upset due to how they have been of the opinion that Biden has been too lax when it comes to immigration, as they see it as a major threat to the country. State officials have been struggling to accommodate their new temporary citizens, as their sheer numbers are overwhelming for any community.

I believe that Biden did the right thing in taking in the Venezuelans despite the strain on the economy that they will likely cause. Since they were mentioned to be “fleeing the South American country” to get here, that begs the question; how will this affect the United States’ relationship with Venezuela. Initially I thought that this would have a positive effect; but upon further analyzing this could possibly have a negative effect instead. This is due to how they were reported to be “fleeing” and now the United States is sheltering them. Are they sheltering them from Venezuela because they’re keeping them in? Or just offering asylum? Are they coming for better economic opportunities, or is it something more? Interesting questions that the passage unfortunately doesn’t answer. Despite the action itself being good natured in theory, the connotations of it could mean quite the opposite for the relations between the US and Venezuela depending on how each side views the situation.

This article relates to international relations because these are states interacting with each other, and their values potentially clashing depending how each party views the situation regarding the Venezuelans. International relations is how everything relates to each other, and this is a prime example of how two states are relating to each other. This could potentially be a critical juncture in the relationship between the US and Venezuela. Sheltering so many people is a massive undertaking, and can be interpreted differently depending on how the relationship between the two is currently. That additional context could be crucial to how this story develops.
