Summary: Mexican President Manuel López Obrador has requested permission from the Mexican senate to allow U.S military personnel to enter Mexican Soil to train Mexican Special Forces, in early 2024. After meeting at the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperative Summit with Biden, America and Mexico’s Diplomatic ties have seemed to grow, or show signs of growth in the future. The entering of military personnel is for a program called “Strengthening the Capacities of the Special Forces of the Defense Ministry.” U.S. soldiers will be assigned to Mexico’s Defense Ministry, which has held close ties with America in the past, but the entering of Military personnel is a new relationship that America and Mexico have not held before.
Analysis: This Summit has seemed to expand the relationship that America has with Mexico. Even between Biden and López Obrador personally, there have been huge tensions between the two countries. So, to see the blossoming of a closer relationship could lead to more security with Drug Cartels that we have seen and also Migration issues. This could also be positive for the security of both countries, being Neighboring countries the relationship they hold can be extremely beneficial or it could be extremely problematic and lead to huge foreign affair issues. Seeing America and Mexico having an improving relationship gives them time to focus on Issues that are plaguing other parts of the world and stay comfortable with their home soil.
Connection to Class: In class, we have focused a lot on the process countries go through to pick allies and countries they feel comfortable with. The most important allies to have are your neighboring ones, or at least that is what America has seen to be true. The positive bond that America has with Mexico, and Canada, gives them surround Security and the ability to continue to grow on their soil without the worry of neighboring countries disrupting that. The entering of Military Personnel to Train in Mexico is also greatly enhancing their security and going to , hopefully, help with the growing drug Cartel issue.
