Recently Cuba has made allegations that Washington was orchestrating efforts to incite unrest on the island before the year’s end. This allegation from Cuba to the U.S. just dug up the history between these 2 countries when Cuba doubled down and made a second allegation stating that “The U.S. State Department and intelligence community intensified subversive activities and violent attacks against Cuba”. Then Cuba came out with a list of over 80 foreign nationals and entities it deems terrorists, this was controversial by including many american icons and leaders. Finally, the U.S. responded when the State Department official dismissed Cuba’s list and claims as an attempt to discredit and belittle Cuban citizens living abroad.
This article is interesting and since the Cuban missile crisis the U.S. and Cuba hasn’t really been in this hot of water. Obviously these 2 countries have significant and deep rooted history but if stories keep coming out like this that raises tensions we could end up in a heated stalemate 90 miles from the border. This article also further proves how relations with the U.S. and Cuba just never seems to get better, the U.S. will never like having a communist country so close and Cuba doesn’t like the U.S thinking they can bully them. Overall, this isn’t good for the region and makes any progress with Cuba we had cease to exist, I do like the Biden administration’s response though but with this country we need to tread lightly.
In class we talk about international security and if we go all the way back to the 60s we saw Cuba pose as a major threat when russia gave them nuclear weapons. We don’t want to fight with this country they are unstable with a win at all costs mindset so it’s best if we take a preemptive approach to this conflict.
