Violent protests paralyze Hati in efforts to remove Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2022, Henry was supposed to hold an election and succeed his power in 2024. Regardless, Henry remains in power. Furthermore, there are five agents of the National Agency for Protected Areas (BSAP), an armed government bureau in an open rebellion. The police and the BSAP have open conflicts and shootouts, along with other rebellion groups. Furthermore, Hati hasn’t had an election since Moise was elected in 2016. Unrest in Haiti has caused The Dominican Republic, to reinforce its borders due to the violence. The two countries share the island of Hispaniola.

Prevalent turmoil in Haiti leads to the ranking of Haiti as the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. Haiti has been run rampant with armed gangs taking over parts of the country. Such unrest is detrimental to the economy along with the public health system. Historically, Haiti was a colony of France. As seen in post-imperialism and post-colonial societies, countries that gained independence have yet to catch up in world affairs. Like many African and Latin American countries, post-colonialism detriments the growth in such countries. Yet, France and other countries that had such colonies do not carry the irreversible burden these societies, like Haiti, have faced.

On a regional level of analysis, the failing state of Haiti is affecting its neighbor the Dominican Republic. Haiti poses a security threat to the Dominican Republic, which could see an influx of immigrants fleeing or the possibility of gangs spreading into their country. As a National Security threat, the Dominican Republic has already established further precautions on its border with Haiti. This failed state not only poses a threat to the Dominican Republic but the International System as a whole. Countries that run rampant with gangs or terrorist groups pose a security threat to any country across the globe. Immigrants fleeing failed states, although they may not be gang-affiliated themselves, force countries to sort through who is coming into their borders.
