President Joe Biden unveiled a $7.3 trillion election-year budget for the 2025 fiscal year, aiming to convince Americans he can manage the economy better than Donald Trump. The proposal comes amid ongoing budget challenges and political disagreements, and includes raising corporate taxes, as well as taxing high earners in order to cut the deficit and fund programs addressing housing and childcare costs. Biden also criticized Trump’s desire for $2 trillion in tax breaks for the wealthy, which in turn, caused resistance from Republicans, with House Speaker Mike Johnson calling it reckless spending. Biden’s plan aims to raise tax receipts by $4.951 trillion over the course of a decade, however, that plan has been deemed insufficient by deficit-reduction advocates. The budget also forecasts GDP growth, inflation, and unemployment figures.
I believe that Biden’s budget proposal reflects a determined effort to address economic challenges and reduce the deficit, especially during times of disagreement. Despite facing resistance from Republicans, Biden’s proactive approach to budgeting is commendable, as the plan’s focus on funding programs for housing, childcare, and other social initiatives aligns with a broader vision of economic equity. The push for tax hikes and increased spending may impact the region (the United States) by reshaping fiscal policies, which could potentially reduce income inequality; however, the likelihood of Congress adopting these measures in their proposed form remains uncertain, as mentioned before. This bill could lead to economic growth, job creation, and social welfare, but the success of these initiatives depends on navigating political divides and ultimately solving the gridlock that comes with the proposal.
In class, we have discussed legitimacy and the right to rule, and Biden’s budget proposal highlights the practical challenges of governance and the right to rule, as it is important to have a proposal that can be agreed upon by most. By presenting a comprehensive plan to address economic issues, Biden seeks to legitimize his administration’s authority and further strengthen the economy. The proposed budget, with its focus on social programs and tax adjustments, also shows an attempt to align policy decisions with public interests, reinforcing the notion of legitimacy derived from citizens’ recognition.
