High level officials from both China and the United States are set to meet in Geneva to talk about AI, otherwise known as artificial intelligence. They plan to converse about regulations that could be set, ensuring a standard for the use of AI and ways to mitigate risk. Both China and the United States recognize the threats that artificial intelligence can have towards national security and even economic growth. The officials on both sides of the talks insisted on remaining anonymous to the reporters covering the events, which was completed by allowing reporters to listen in through a distorted phone call. The United States strives to outline possible risks of artificial intelligence by voluntary committing to working with the sectors leading companies, as well as requiring safety tests of all products and software that gets released.
The United States and China agreeing to set regulations and having a mutual agreement to a standard which controls how the potential of AI is explored is a positive step towards stronger relations and a safer world between 2 world powers. I fully expect both sides to disregard this standard and direct significant investments into the world of artificial intelligence, either for military or economic gain. The use of AI is inevitable, and it will be weaponized somehow but these meetings can set the standard for other countries as AI becomes a bigger deal in the world. Once we see China and the United States begin to have meetings other countries will follow suit, which helps standardize and regulate the use of artificial intelligence globally.
In class we talk about how countries play follow the leader, with the leader generally being world powers like China, Russia, and the United States. This meeting allows other countries the opportunity to “follow the leader” and have meetings of their own which will expand the global regulations of artificial intelligence.
