New president elected Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs regarding Canada and Mexico, which has seemed to create a split between the Canada and Mexico because Canada officials said that their borders shouldn’t be compared. Mexico’s president rejected the comments and Trump and the Canadian prime minister met together. “Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico unless they stem the flow of migrants and drugs.” These are in place because Canada has 43 pounds of fentanyl at their border and Mexico had 21,100 pounds at theirs, causing it to get into America and affect lives there. The comments between Canada and Mexico have caused hurt feelings. They both want to meet with Trump before he takes office and make arrangements with him.

This article and the courses of this event show how much the US can impact other places. One change in the US government can shift the tide of many other countries, especially the ones that America borders. It also shows how the media can really make things happen. Canada made comments about the tariffs in regards to Mexico that Mexico heard and got upset over. This is interesting because it went through the US and media to get to them. The US stirred this up by making threats to the bordering countries about border security and tariffs.

The US might work to actually impose these tariffs to the border no matter what the other countries say. Trump’s motives are to create more security of the US borders by doing these tariffs because of the drugs. Canada and Mexico will have to respond well to this and decide if they will be a part of it or not. Canada made a comment about not being able to compare the borders after these threats and Mexico didn’t like that, so they responded. They created a bit of bad blood through these comments and will have to see where that goes.

The US is the most powerful country and we have a unipolar system because of this. Because the US has a lot of power, they are able to impose these tariffs or threaten them to get what they want because US foreign policy is very strong. Trump’s national interest in this case is to make the United States more secure, especially with things coming through the bordering countries. He is trying to maintain the status quo powers and secure his country that he will be the president of soon.
