Congress and the Navy are currently in dispute with the Trump administration over the development of the US Navy’s new fighter jet to replace the current F/A 18 Super hornet with a new stealth fighter jet. There has been funding provided by Congress as they designated 453 million dollars for the development of the new jet, however, the Pentagon wants to put the money towards something else and delay the development by up to 3 years. They claim the US does not have the capacity to be able to mass produce these new fighter jet’s as well as engineering problems. They have yet to figure out who will build these as they have Boeing and Northrop Grumman in the running.

This could have major implications with how the US is able to keep up with the global superpowers as China and other nations would take over with Naval superiority. Even though the US won’t be a unipolar power anymore and wants it to be more of a multi-polar system they would still need to keep up with new and advanced equipment as we still need to be able to defend ourselves as well as our allies. If the US falls behind it could cause China to rise and overpower the US and could heavily influence policies and trade around the world.

The US could put the money into developing the new fighter jet to keep up with the rest of the world, but that would require lots of planning and I don’t think we have the capability yet. The other option is we follow the pentagons reasoning and wait as we would be able to slowly gather all the capabilities to mass produce and build these new fighter jet’s. This would set us back and allow China to be able to develop better jet’s which would be a significant step back for the US. As the US steps to a more offshore balancing approach, the US wouldn’t need to control the worlds oceans anymore which could be used to delay the production and make the jet better rather than a rushed jet that could possibly have failures to it. We would still be dominant in our region and since we’ve moved into a more offshore balancing approach we would be able to only worry on the Americas rather than the whole world. We however will still have capabilities to stop enemies and protect ourselves and our allies.
