The United States is deploying the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier to the Venezuelan coast. This is meant to be a flex or a show of force from the US in order to project their dominance in the area. The reason given for the flex was to help disrupt drug running and trafficking. However many people are saying that this is not the reason. Many analysts have talked about how this could be one of the first steps in trying to pressure President Maduro of Venezuela to make reform or maybe even get the nation to push for regime change. This follows as the US has been conducting deadly strikes on ships that are suspected to be carrying drugs, this blockading campaign has been criticized at on a global level due to the violence the US has chosen to respond with. In response to the attacks on the Venezuelan nationals the nation has been set to mobilize their military to whatever extent that they can. The article ends by talking about the exiled politician, Lopez. He has thanked the US for bringing their ships into the area and has stated that all Venezuelans want freedom and that their oppressor is Maduro.
The US sending their warships into the area highlights a key shift in the political state of the Caribbean that has not been seen for decades. Concepts like the defense paradox really come into play here. Even if intentions are genuine and the US only wishes to pressure the Venezuelan government, then even still other nations will not just stand by and hope that the US will play fair and respect the lines on the map. This could 100% lead to an anti-US alliance due to the aggression that the US has taken with the Venezuelans.
The US can keep pressuring the Venezuelans risking a war at the most and an anti-US precedent in the region at the least. Or they can kick things off and start putting boots on the ground or just military action in general in order to send a message of necessary compliance to all the nations in the area that wish to threaten America. The Venezuelans can’t do much, one thing that they could do would be to promise another Vietnam to Trump and the Americans creating a huge deterrent. They also could submit to the demands of the Americans, however this would set a precedent that they are not willing to defend their sovereignty and could lead to civil unrest or even civil war.
As I mentioned earlier I think the idea of the defense paradox is a key role player here. For one the more that the US tries to “Defend its borders” the more Maduro is going to assume that something big is going to happen. In addition the Venezuelan mobilization could be seen the same way. This could lead to a latin american alliance that opposes the Americans due to the same paradox.
