The United States lifted sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, undoing penalties placed on him in July under the Global Magnitsky Act. Moraes was sanctioned for overseeing the criminal case that led to former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro being convicted and sentenced to prison for attempting a coup after the 2022 election. The sanctions included freezing assets and banning U.S. individuals and companies from doing business with him. They also applied to his wife and her bank.

These actions happened during a time of tense relations between the U.S. and Brazil under President Donald Trump. Trump accused Moraes of abusing the judicial system and limiting free speech. At the same time, the U.S. placed high tariffs on Brazilian products like beef and coffee.

The sanctions were removed as the Trump administration started easing tariffs and improving relations with Brazil’s current president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Lula thanked Trump and said the move supported Brazil’s democracy. While the decision helped reduce tensions, Bolsonaro’s supporters criticized it, saying it weakens pressure on Brazil’s courts.

Since Trump returned to office, the U.S. has used sanctions and tariffs as tools to pressure other countries. It is interesting to see these policies being softened after taking such a tough approach. I think this change is partly because Americans were upset about higher prices for goods like beef and coffee. While tariffs were meant to protect U.S. businesses and reduce reliance on foreign goods, this situation shows how they can also hurt consumers and lead to pushback.

Brazil will likely try to improve its relationship with the U.S. as America focuses more on the Western Hemisphere. Since Trump and Lula are now on better terms, trade and investment between the two countries could increase. Brazil’s energy and mineral resources are important to the U.S., so both sides could benefit. Trump may also try using tariffs and sanctions on other South American countries if he believes this approach worked with Brazil.

This article shows how U.S. foreign policy is shifting away from being a global leader and toward focusing more on its own region. By spending less money on NATO and Ukraine, the U.S. can focus more on the Americas. This connects to ideas we learned about offshore balancing, where a country focuses on nearby regions but still stays involved in global issues when needed.
