The CNN article describes how American tourists became stranded in western Mexico after violence erupted following the killing of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Mexican security forces killed the cartel boss in a military operation, which triggered retaliatory attacks by cartel members across several states.
Cartel fighters reportedly burned buses, cars, and businesses, set up roadblocks, and clashed with security forces, creating widespread disruption. The unrest forced airlines to suspend or cancel flights to major tourist destinations such as Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara, leaving many travelers unable to leave the region.
Tourists described chaotic scenes, including burning vehicles and smoke filling the skyline. Some said they were told to return to their hotels and remain indoors as violence spread through the area.
The U.S. State Department urged Americans in affected areas to shelter in place, avoid crowds, and follow local authorities’ instructions while officials monitored the situation and airlines worked to restore flights.
The cartel has been a significant threat in Northern America for quite some time. Major events like this fuel outrage and cause the criminal group to rebel against and terrorize the government and the population. The US has dealt with cartel violence since 1930s/1940s. These drug groups will create violence to prevent prosecution or fuel their wealth gain. Cartels such as the mexican cartel, are large drug empires which involve many underground workers. These drug empires make large amounts of money through smuggling drugs into the US. When the government attempts to interfere, violence/resistance occurs.
US government could interfere or cooperate with Mexican government to create a solution to protect citizens and tourists in threatened regions. US could impose sanctions or travel restrictions to tense relations and prevent the cartels operations from entering the US.
This is an example of a security threat due to organize crime. The cartel is threatening the lives of individuals both in Mexico and the US. The cartel is a threat to the safety of the US, so the government must act against it to eliminate potential danger that could occur. Travelling isn’t safe for tourists due to the group’s violence. The acts being committed by the cartel also threaten the lives of American consumers who are purchasing illegal drugs from the cartel.
