The AP News article reports on escalating tensions in the Middle East involving the U.S., Iran, Israel, and Lebanon. U.S. President Donald Trump said the U.S. is in contact with an Iranian leader and suggested Iran may be open to negotiating a deal to end the conflict. At the same time, fighting continues across the region. Israel has carried out strikes in Lebanon targeting Hezbollah, while Iran has threatened retaliation and warned it could attack key infrastructure if pressure continues. Trump has also issued strong warnings, including threats to destroy Iranian power facilities if demands are not met, though he has recently signaled a possible pause in military action. Overall, the situation remains highly unstable, with ongoing violence, rising civilian casualties, and uncertainty over whether diplomacy or further escalation will shape the next phase of the conflict.

As conflict continues, the region destabilizes. The introduction of US government into the ongoing conflict only makes the war more severe. As more countries become involved, the conflict grows and suddenly what was once a multi-state/regional conflict has developed into a full blown global conflict. This could be detrimental for the population, as the region has already been struggling to survive in the current state of war.

The US government should continue to encourage a ceasefire, as that could help to minimize the amount of attacks occurring in the middle east.  A ceasefire could be the beginning steps towards compromise and rebuilding relations between the US and Iran. A ceasefire agreement would also protect the populations who were unable to evacuate in the affected regions.

This is an example of a rival state, and how a state might approach a threat. The US took a preventative approach towards Iran as it was deemed a threat due to its nuclear weapon development. The US bombed Iran in order to eliminate the threat that Iran would continue to progress and eventually attack the US. Following 9/11, this has been the approach that the US often takes to prevent war on US territory.
