Marco Rubio, the United States Secretary of State, had a meeting with the G7 nations with one of the main points of discussion being the strikes in the Caribbean because of the Venezuelan drug ships. This part of the meeting was a sort of intervention for the United States because all the other G7 nations believe that what the US is doing is unethical. Rubio pushed back saying that eurasian nations should believe they have a say in how Washington protects its country. After the meeting Rubio was interviewed and he made claims that european powers should be thanking the United States because these “narco-terrorists” were on their way to start moving in Europe too so the US thinks that they are solving the problem for everyone.
I think Rubio was right to defend his countries national interest because that is his job as the secretary of state. I don’t think it was fair for the G7 nations to gang up on the US like they did because all of them are on the other half of the world and don’t know the real effects of these narco-terrorists on the well being of our nation. I think Rubio should have maybe refrained a little in the post meeting interview because I think saying the other nations should be thanking the US was a little cocky and he should’ve talked about how the US planned to solve the problem once and for all instead of just saying they’re gonna keep the missle strikes coming.
I think Rubio should go back on the record and instead of feeding the news media a catchy headline he should explain how they’re going to end the problem instead of how they’re currently suppressing it. For the G7 nations I think they should keep to themselves until it starts to hurt them because everybody knows that the Eurasian nations don’t actually care about the Venezuelan deaths because the world works in an anarchical system where its survival of the fittest and you only can really care about your own interest especially if you have a lot of global responsibility like the G7 nations have.
What Rubio is doing in this situation is protecting his nations national interest because Trump has made it very clear that he wants the narco-terrorists out of US waters and to replace the authority in Venezuela with someone he approves of. The secretary of state’s job is to speak for the whole nation in important meetings like these that the president may not be able to make it to. This is why Rubio did a good job because he didn’t go rogue and started spouting his beliefs instead he promoted his nations national identity.
