US official: Venezuela government ‘steals from food programme’

The US has accused Venezuela’s government of stealing from a state-run food programme while its own people go hungry. Marshall Billingslea, a US treasury official, said Venezuelan government officials were over-charging for food. He said corruption by President Nicolás Maduro and his inner circle had “impoverished millions” of Venezuelans.

Nicaragua crisis: Families march for ‘political prisoners’

Families of activists jailed during Nicaragua’s anti-government protests have marched in the capital, Managua, to demand their release. Human rights groups say at least 135 people remain detained following the protests, which began in April. Brazil candidate Jair Bolsonaro to undergo ‘major surgery’

The far-right candidate in Brazil’s presidential election, Jair Bolsonaro, is to have more major surgery after he was stabbed during a campaign rally on Thursday.
