A UN investigator looking into the plight of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar says genocide against the minority is still going on.
The leader of a UN fact-finding mission on Myanmar, Marzuki Darusman, told reporters on Wednesday that the remaining Rohingya community continues to suffer the most severe oppression, adding that nothing has fundamentally changed over the past year.
Darusman also attended a Security Council briefing where he asked the member states to agree to take the case to the International Criminal Court.
Myanmar ambassador to the UN Hau Do Suan said his delegation rejected the investigator’s report, saying its conclusion is “made on unverified circumstantial evidence with no sound legal proof.”
The briefing was held at the request of several countries, including the United States and Britain.
China and Russia, which support Myanmar’s position on this issue, tried unsuccessfully to block it.
The UN says more than 700,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh since August of last year to escape the crackdown.
