China is continuing to flex their muscles at Taiwan and one of Taiwan’s closest allies, the United States. Some believe that this could be a sign of Beijing’s preparation for war. A defense minister out of Taiwan said that relations between them and China are at their worst in 40 years. Jinping knows that launching an invasion on Taiwan could put them at more risk than reward. Jinping also said that a goal of his is to reunite with Taiwan but the targeted year isn’t until 2049. Taiwan’s president has made no hint that she will try and move forward with a formal declaration of independence. She basically said there is no need to declare ourselves an independent state because we are already an independent country.
One of the main reasons China is scared to launch an invasion on Taiwan is because of the relationship between the United States and Taiwan. The United States has already strengthened its friendship with Taiwan recently and China knows that if they were to launch an invasion that they would have to deal with the United States. The United States has threatened multiple times that they will offer their support to Taiwan but China is still increasing tensions by sending fighter jets off coasts of the Island of Taiwan. I think that China has a lot of courage to continue essentially threatening Taiwan knowing that the United States is there to be an ally of Taiwan.
Although Taiwan is a non recognized state as their president said she feels no need to formally declare independence from China because she feels they are already an independent country. China must take into account the levels of analysis and think about what it will do to them if they invade Taiwan (interstate/regional level) and what it will do to the whole world if they invade Taiwan (global level). If China invades Taiwan it could potentially drag the United States into it, possibly causing other members of NATO to get involved and could cause a World War Three.
