The G20 met at an emergency summit to discuss the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. These crises include civil servants not being paid, an increase to food prices, and banks not having money that is able to be withdrawn. Many countries are not recognizing the Taliban government so it is hard to help the citizens without interacting with the Taliban. Some countries such as India are not taking as hard of a stance with their Prime Minister saying that “The Taliban would be judged by their deeds, not their words”. Some of the internal issues happening in Afghanistan are occurring because much of Afghanistan’s international assets have been frozen mainly by the United States and United Kingdom.
China is a member of the G20 summit but they were not in attendance. It is speculated that Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend due to the rest of the G20 deciding to continue holding Afghanistan’s assets. China has demanded that all of the countries give back the assets of Afghanistan and lift the economic sanctions that are further crippling the economy of Afghanistan. China has in the past had friendly relations with one another so it makes sense that China would want Afghanistan to stabilize so they can continue with their trading. The United States and United Kingdom still refuse to unfreeze the assets that they hold. If this continues it may cause China to not attend the next G20 which could have major repercussions on the world because the upcoming G20 summit is focusing on climate change.
The G20 summit is an IGO that is made of the 19 wealthiest countries and the European Union. The purpose of the G20 is to address issues such as the global economy, climate change, and sustainable development. When one country refuses to attend these meetings it could harm their economy due to possibly losing trade or getting massive tariffs from the other 18 wealthy countries and the European Union. The global community needs to work together and if countries continue to not attend global summits due to their demands not being met it could have massive repercussions on the world economy as a whole.
