In early September, Putin invited Kim Jong Un to Russia’s Far East to show the country they intend to support their endeavors in space travel, in a possible exchange for military cooperation against the west. North Korea has attempted to put a spy satellite into space twice, neither have been successful however with this new exchange of intelligence they intend to try again within the next month. The United States, South Korea, and Japan have made it clear they do not intend to support this alliance and have issued warnings regarding international sanctions, Russia and North Korea would fall into violation with. Russia is seeking artillery shells as well as anti-tank missiles from Pyongyang, while the United States believes Putin is desperate in seeking a meeting with the North Korean leader.

If North Korea successfully launches a spy satellite in October, there could be many different outcomes and consequences. One of the most important being increased tensions between North Korea and the westward, democratic counties that oppose this like Japan and the United States, another could be increased sanctions against North Korea which would potentially have negative impacts on the country’s economy. We don’t know when Russia and North Korea will meet again and as far as the meeting in early September the details have been very secretive, if North Korea goes forward with military cooperation it would be responded with diplomatic efforts possibly involving countries like Russia and China which have negotiated with North Korea in the past.

Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un are global actors, the political leaders of Russia and North Korea, when meeting in Russia these leaders talked of global challenges, an example would be war and violence. While Russia is engaged in conflict with Ukraine as well as tensions with global superpowers, North Korea has had tensions with the United States because of its increased missile testing recently. With intentions of space travel and possibly launching a spy satellite, I do not believe North Korea is prepared for the likely consequences to come from this alliance. As of September 21st 2023, South Korea has placed sanctions on North Korea’s illegal weapons trades, one of many repercussions to come.
