Iran has reduced stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium, says nuclear watchdog

The stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium in Iran has been reduced according to a report by the International Atomic Weapons Agency (IAEA). In October Iran had 128.3 kilograms of Uranium enriched to approximately 60% and by February the stockpile had been reduced to 121.5 kilograms. However, Iran may have reduced their stockpile of near weapons-grade uranium, the report also stated that they have increased in stocks of uranium to 20%. Weapons-grade uranium is usually considered to be enriched above 90% while anything above 20% is considered highly enriched.Iran’s implementation of its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) a deal agreed between Iran and a group of world powers back in 2015.

The report of Iran reducing its weapon-grade uranium is very good for the region because of nuclear weapons. The JCPOA agreement and the agency has been watching over Iran so they do not make these weapons of mass destruction. However the world should still be concerned about Iran’s possible expansion of their nuclear program. In 2023 Iran throttled enrichment rates for political reasons several times slowing and increasing the rates while their nuclear stockpile continued to grow. It is also very interesting that the report comes at a time where tensions are very high between the U.S. and Iran with many Iran-backed proxies launching attacks against the American military. As well as Houthi rebels in the Red Sea.

This relates to our international government class because of intergovernmental organizations and security. The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action is a plan to reduce highly enriched uranium to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities. This is important because uranium can be used to make nuclear weapons in Iran. This issue is likely more important now because of the war in Israel and Iran backing Hamas. Because of the actions taken by the JCPOA the security of Israel and allied forces is more secure from nuclear weapons from Iran as well as the world. The job they are doing is protecting the world from a dangerous state potentially using nuclear bombs to destroy major cities in the region as well as the world.
