North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered heightened readiness for war after inspecting troops at a major military operations base in the country’s west. Kim’s visit took place as forces from the United States and South Korea continued their annual Freedom Shield large-scale military exercises. Moreover, North Korea has always condemned military drills by the US and South Korea, claiming they are rehearsals for an invasion, and has conducted weapons tests in response to previous exercises. On Monday, KCNA quoted an unnamed spokesperson for North Korea’s Ministry of Defence urging Seoul and Washington to cease their “reckless” and “frantic war drills”. The US and South Korea “will be made to pay a dear price for their false choice”, the spokesperson added. Additionally, it was said that the North Korean troops at the base were conducting maneuvers under conditions simulating actual war, in response to the US and South Korea actions.
In my opinion, this open-ended threat that the US and South Korea will pay the price for their false choices comes with a lot of implications. First, it leaves room for uncertainty for the US and South Korea and can create a sense of vulnerability. I also think the US and South Korea should act accordingly and address and mitigate these threats to ensure safety and security, especially considering North Korea’s large nuclear weapons program. Additionally, these increased tensions between the nations in my opinion will keep rising as South Korea and US relations grow. This can be seen by the U.S.-Republic of Korea (ROK) Nuclear Consultative Group coming together in Washington. The group stated that a nuclear attack by North Korea against the United States or its allies is unacceptable and will result in the end of the Kim regime.
This article and its contents relate to our international relations classes as it dives into topics of international security and US national security. North Korea’s exponential increase In nuclear weapons not only threatens US national security as there are possibilities of a direct attack on the United States or its allies. Additionally, nuclear technology threatens international security and can contribute to the destabilization of the region. The article also relates to the US grand strategy and shows the United States still maintains a liberal hegemonic status. This can be seen by constant involvement in Asia with South Korea. If the United States were to adopt an offshore balancing approach the nation would supply and support South Korea in dealing with North Korea on its own. I think with an offshore balancing approach the US would build up South Korea and Japan as regional possibly global powers, so the nations could deter and combat North Korea’s actions on their own.
