Analysis Post: Yazidi Women Win Sakharov Prize

Often considered a “taboo” or “uncomfortable” subject, sexual assault and enslavement is rarely covered as much as it should be in the media. Sexual enslavement and abuse of women is one of the continuing tragedies in the world today. Especially in LDC’s and other areas where gender empowerment is lacking, women face these problems every day without any notice from the public eye. The decision by the EU to award the highest honor, the Sakharov Prize, to two victims of sexual enslavement is a big step forward. With all the protests, complaints, and conflicts over refugees in Europe, the awarding of the prize to two refugees is very symbolic. European Parliament President Martin Schulz was in favor of the decision, stating that “We as [the] European parliament are now supporting them in their fight for, not only the dignity we have to grant to everybody, but also for their fight to give testimony as a witness to these atrocities.” The fact that an important European figure is supporting these women gives hope to other victims and refugees who are in similar situations. These strong women are examples that despite the terrible events around you, you can rise above and triumph. Both Nadia Murad Basee and Lamiya Aji Bashar, the recipients of this award, are now advocating for Yazidis and speaking out about the abuses they faced.
