EU Expansion?

In the article,‘New world order’ Juncker ally wants EU expansion to send bloc’s reach to Russia doorstep it talks about how Ukraine wants to be apart of the EU. This is a hard call to make because of the size of the country and its history with Russia. If the EU were to expand and accept Ukraine then any interference they have with Russia will be backed by other countries with a heavier military presence. I feel like this move would make Russia more aggressive because now its right at their border. They might feel like they are being backed into a corner and lash out. We can already see that they feel the need to flex by having military exercises. And the question that has to be asked is what could Ukraine do to benefit the EU? There is promise on that topic because Ukraine has “new opportunities” and “stability in the banking sector” for the EU. The corruption in the country poses as a red flag though. With corruption in the country it will be hard to say that it will be a stable resource for the EU. Its hard to say what harm they could do to the Union in the long run if they were to be accepted and then fall as a nation. Their eastern border has also been in trouble because of the relationship they have with their neighbor, Russia. Towards the end of the article it starts to give more positive reasons for why Ukraine should be apart of the EU. Such as that it would be a “hub for economic growth and prosperity.” Even the British minister for foreign and commonwealth affairs said, ” It may seem counter-intuitive, we are seeking to leave the EU, and supporting you joining. This is democracy.” This appeals to the fact that most of the world is run under some sort of democracy and that it is unfair to leave Ukraine out on the Union when they hold lots of opportunities and needs protection.
