The U.K is scheduled to leave the EU on March 29th, but there are still many questions as to how things will end up. British parliament just passed an amendment forcing Theresa May and her administration to come up with a new Brexit proposal for parliament much sooner than it would have been originally. Parliament will vote on Mays “soft” Brexit deal this coming Tuesday, this is a result of the December 11th vote being delayed. Most expect this deal to be voted down because it is the same deal she last proposed to parliament only now she has a bargaining chip of the looming deadline of March 29th.
Theresa May has used that incentive to try and pass her own Brexit deal, giving the parliament a choice between her deal or a no-deal Brexit. With no major political parties supporting a no-deal Brexit this would mean everyone would lose, including their economy, according to recent projections. If parliament cannot reach a deal by the March 29th deadline they will be forced into a no-deal Brexit.
This is Theresa May’s main leverage, but with this new amendment she may have just lost the only leverage she had. Along with forcing her to propose a “Plan B” to parliament just 3 days after Tuesdays vote, in stead of the standard 21 days; If parliament rejects her second proposal they will have the option to create their own proposal, bypassing the executive position.
What this proposal would look like is uncertain with many issues still under debate, including the border of Northern Ireland. As if that wasn’t scary enough the opposition to Theresa May, The Labour Party, has threatened to call for another vote of no confidence if her deal is rejected this coming Tuesday. If that vote were to pass there would be another set of general elections to elect a new prime minister.
