Russia and the US are getting into negotiations on a prisoner swap. Russia will get the arms dealer Viktor Bout and possibly some others, in exchange for the return of US prisoners including Paul Whelan and Brittney Griner, who is an American basketball player. While Viktor Bout has been in US custody since 2008, Brittney Griner has just been transferred to a Russian penal colony after being accused of drug charges. The Russian foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov says that negotiations are being made through a “special channel,” and that the “prospect is being strengthened.”
This isn’t surprising, given the fact that it’s just an exchange of prisoners. Nor am I surprised that both countries are willing to agree about this, especially when this won’t lead to a declaration of friendship anytime soon. We’ve gotten prisoners back from North Korea, so I don’t know why some people are optimistic or suprised about this coming into light. The only reason this really won’t go through is if Russia either does something really bad, or we don’t get or give what each side wants.
