On September 13, 2024, the European Commission presented EU ambassadors with three options for renewing sanctions on Russian central bank assets, which assets to underpin the G7 loan for Ukraine to help defend itself against Putin’s invasion. The options include a five-year freeze with annual reviews, a 36-month renewal period with unanimous voting, or extending all Russia-related sanctions to 36 months. These options are intended to ensure the EU sanctions remain intact, which is necessary for the G7 loan. The proposals were discussed with the U.S. and aim to address previous challenges with sanction renewals.

This article shows its importance by showing support for Ukraine in these times, with the G7 loan it could provide crucial financial aid for this country against Russia. Ensuring that pressure is on Russia by keeping sanctions in place and supporting Ukraine’s ability to defend itself. This means that there is international coordination with the US and other international partners for the EU’s proposal. Sanction renewls and modifications require coordination with each other to be effective showing the collective support other countries have for Ukraine in the invasion. This event shows the strong stance the EU has with Russia and could affect the EU and Russian relations. I think this is a bold choice by the EU that could cause some bad terms to happen between the two power forces. I understand why they chose to do it though, Russia has always had tension was the EU and was largely driven by religious and cultural differences, as well as Russia’s expansionist policies.

The EU members would support strong sanctions might favor the five-year freeze for stability, while other members may prefer the 36-month renewal with unanimous voting to ensure broader consensus and address concerns. The Russian government wouldn’t like any of the sanctions and would there and find ways to bypass them. On the opposite the Ukraine government would support the strongest option, favoring the five-year freeze to ensure continued pressure on Russia and help get stable in financial support.

In class, we discuss the effects of what Russia, Putin, has done with the invasion of Ukraine and what it has done economically to them. In general, Russia has always had tense relations with European countries due to their ambitious personality. Russia is a global actor along with the EU causing some problems between them. A lot of conversations are about how Russia has always bee cold towards other countries and wanting to take back states that they has lost like Ukraine. If Russia does succeed, it leaves the debate would they stop there? They have eyes on Poland and after that they could try to take over other countries.
