In the last week, Russia has begun ordering an evacuation of the villages located in the Kursk region, which border Ukraine. At the same time, Moscow states it has taken over two more cities, Uspenovka and Borki, residing under Kyiv’s control. Additionally, the Ukrainian foreign ministry has implored both the UN and the International Red Cross to ensure that Russia is respecting International law as well as to provide humanitarian aid to Kursk, a city located in Russia. Among the villages being evacuated are the districts of Rylsky and Khomutovsky, which are within a 15 kilometer range of the Ukrainian border. Since Russia’s offensive movement beginning August 6th, over 150,000 people have been forced to evacuate from their villages.
This recent evacuation is undoubtedly related to the attack Ukraine launched on August 6th, which has since been countered through a retaliation by Russia, pushing Ukrainian forces back towards the Western border. However, Russia claims that Ukraine continues to make attempts at breaking through the Western border into the Kursk region, which explains why they have started evacuating villages specifically within this region. The Russian military could potentially be planning their next response in terms of the West borders, and clearing the citizens from these areas will minimize the loss of population that would result from another massive attack.
As a result of Russia’s most recent retaliation, I believe Ukraine could take advantage of the chaos surrounding the ongoing evacuation and rally military efforts to push back against Russia’s attempts to push them back through the Western border. In addition, one of Ukraine’s main goals may be the intent of impacting Russia’s civilian population, as they have recently requested permission from NATO to fire Western made missiles directly into Russia. If a portion of Russia’s population is migrating further into the heart of Russia, casualties would potentially double if Ukraine were to target this area. Furthermore, as I stated earlier, Russia may be planning a response directed at the Ukrainian troops positioned at the Western border now that they have diminished the risk of civilian casualties in this particular region.
Relating to the topic of the Global Arena, we have been discussing global challenges such as violence, war, and population issues. The Ukrainian and Russian region is experiencing all of the above. Since Russia instigated an attack on Ukraine in 2022, there has been a back and forth of conflict, with both countries experiencing a drop in population. In addition to a decrease, Russia’s population has been shifting within its borders, with a portion of Russia’s citizens situated in the Western regions moving further into the center of Russia.
