The article describes how Ukraine is signaling support for the general framework of a new U.S.-backed peace plan with Russia, but still says that several sensitive issues can only be worked out in a direct meeting between Zelenskiy and Trump. The push for a deal seems to be coming mainly from the Trump administration, and it has caught a lot of people off guard because the plan includes major concessions Ukraine has always rejected, like giving up more territory, accepting limits on its military, and agreeing to never join NATO. This is all happening while Zelenskiy is politically vulnerable after a corruption scandal and as Russia steps up missile and drone attacks, including a massive strike on Kyiv the night before. European leaders say peace is important, but not if it means Ukraine is basically forced into surrender. The situation has raised new worries across the region, especially after Russian drones briefly crossed into Romania.

It shows how the U.S. is trying to rush into a deal to stop this conflict as soon as possible and how their biggest goal is to maintain peace. Ukraine has every right to be cautious because rushing into a compromise could affect their region, possibly causing Russia to attack with more force later on.  Since a large sum of the deal is Ukraine having to give up territory, it is seen as more of a surrender rather than a peace deal, and Ukraine losing a lot of resources can greatly affect their security in the future. I believe that this is happening because Ukraine and Zelenskiy are slowly weakening, and the U.S. thinks that if they don’t do something fast Russia will take over all of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian government could respond by agreeing to this deal to try and stop this once and for all.  It is likely that they will proceed with more caution, picking apart the deal and disagreeing with anything to do with territory and military loss.  The U.S. could focus more on helping Ukraine get out of this peacefully by changing the points of the deal, but it seems that they want to finish this as soon as possible even if it means throwing Ukraine under the bus a little.  Russia can, and most likely will, agree to a similar deal because they want to gain as much territory from Ukraine as possible.

This connects to class because Ukraine’s security threat is mainly caused by an inter-state conflict and, while cooperation may be used to stop this threat, the U.S. is almost taking an approach similar to hegemonic realist ideals.  The U.S. is trying to promote global security, even if it means giving up Ukrainian territory to Russia.  This shows how the U.S. is more focused on promoting cooperation and stability rather than saving the interests of smaller countries.  If the U.S. were to push more for Ukrainian interests, they believe it could affect national and global security.
