Last month, there was an attempted attack via bomb-loaded-drone at the Leipzig/Halle airport in Germany. On Tuesday, the German government publicly announced their blame for the attack on Russia. Furthermore, the German government explained that it would shut down a Russian consulate, alongside other punishments by Germany. This situation is a result of continued tension between Russia and the European Union, and the punishments imposed by the German government will add to the sanctions over Russia over these past few years by many European nations since the start of the Ukrainian invasion. Western officials have repeatedly claimed that Russia has been attempting to sabotage European support for Ukraine by causing disruption, and this attack continues the evidence for this. German investigators concluded that the drone was of Russian origin due to its manufacturing, resembling those used by Russia in the invasion of Ukraine. As for the repercussions issued by Germany, the Russian consulate in Bonn will be shut down by the German government on September 18th. Russian officials have continuously denied the allegations regarding past incidents and notably this instance. Russian President Putin dismissed blame for the attack, stating that blaming Russia was a move on the Germans to distract their people from their own shortcomings.

This event is important as it demonstrates the escalation of tension between the European Union and Russia, as the Russian government attempts to take more drastic measures to cut European support for Ukraine amidst its invasion, a conflict that has developed drastically the past four years. The usage of a drone attack sets a new standard of sabotage for this cold war, justifying future acts of sabotage in retaliation on both sides. Ultimately, this results in prolonged tenuous relations and conflict between Russia and the European Union, and could prompt more disastrous events that would escalate the war further. This attack could lead to numerous possibilities of response from both sides. The European Union, having felt their security violated and the boundaries of the conflict overstepped, could increase funding and support for Ukraine to counter the Russian invasion, as well as imposing more sanctions on Russia. More EU member states could cut Russian relations and close consulates and embassies. Ukraine most likely will use this event to wage further European support for their defense. Russia, angered by the allegations of their involvement, will continue to deny their fault for the attack and in doing so create more turmoil with Europe.

This event connects to many of our course concepts, notably that of peace and conflict, as well as nations, states, and their sovereignty. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a conflict that continues to develop. A substantial reason for Russia’s justification in the invasion is the prevention of Western influence on ex-Soviet states, attempting to maintain influence and control over the region as Ukraine continue to align itself with NATO and the EU. The invasion aims to exert control of Ukraine through the removal of its sovereignty, so that Russia may continue its dominance.
