On December 18, 2025, Ukraine carried out drone strikes deep inside Russia’s Rostov region, killing at least three people, including two sailors aboard a cargo vessel and one civilian in Bataysk, where homes were damaged, officials said. The attack triggered fires and marked another escalation of Ukrainian long-range drone operations against Russian territory. The strikes occurred as European Union leaders debated financial assistance for Ukraine, including plans to unlock or leverage frozen Russian assets to fund Kyiv’s defense and keep its economy from collapsing next year. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged EU partners to demonstrate resolve by approving a large funding package to make clear to Moscow that continuing the war “is pointless.” European summits in Brussels were seen as a key test of transatlantic support for Kyiv, while divisions remained over mechanisms for financing Ukraine’s war effort and the broader diplomatic strategy to end Russia’s invasion.

This is an important article because it goes over not only the frontline escalation of the war, but also the diplomatic stress it has caused. The drone strike inside of Russian lines signify Kyiv’s willingness to keep moving the battlefield into their enemy’s territory while Western support debates the funding in Brussels. This is a good example of how military tactics and geopolitics are connected bc Ukraine hopes to continue their pressure, but also is trying to make a political case for their need for continued aid. As for the US, our policy debates and the way we position ourselves around European funding definitely reflect bigger questions about the long-term commitment to Ukraine’s defense. These drone strikes are also an example of how advancements have been made for warfare.

Ukraine’s gov will likely continue to intensify their diplomatic outreach to get better funding from the EU and the US, saying that the continued military pressure is essential for Ukraine’s national survival. European leaders could strengthen by approving the funding or they could risk the disruption of agreements with the other countries. Russia’s gov will most definitely label the drone attack as an act of terrorism, and in return, counteract much stronger and increase their military pressure. NATO AND THE US policymakeers might respond by continuing their support for Kyiv and clarifying their long-term assistance.

All of this ties into the theme of power dynamics and alliances. The drone strikes are an example of modern warfare where advanced technology is being used in a cost effective way, which reshapes the strategies of conflict. The EU funding debate is collective action because multilateral institutions are struggling to agree on how to act/cooperate. This is also a security dilemma because one side’s attempt to strengthen its defense (Ukraine) can be seen as a provocation to the others (Russia). It also connects to economics because the ideas of using some of Russia’s frozen asset money to help fund Ukraine and/or loans to influence military outcomes.
