The first article I read this time around was about the trial in Saudi Arabia regarding the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. From what I’ve read and learned, Jamal Khashoggi was from Saudi Arabia and moved to the US to be a journalist. Jamal Khashoggi had been criticising the Saudi Arabian government and it’s policies through his writing and reporting. The Saudi Arabian king was not fond of his country being criticised publicly to the whole world by this well-known journalist. While visiting the Saudi Arabian embassy in Istanbul Turkey, Jamal Khashoggi was murdered by a bunch of . The body of Khashoggi has still not yet been found, therefore many have assumed gruesome causes of death and disposal of body. It is assumed that the king ordered the murder of the soon-to-be-married journalist in Turkey.
Now, the attorney general of Saudi Arabia has sought to penalize five of the eleven hit men who brutally murdered Jamal Khashoggi with the death penalty. The article I read stated, “The 59-year-old Saudi insider-turned-critic, Jamal Khashoggi, was strangled and his body cut into pieces by a team of 15 Saudis sent to Istanbul for the killing, according to Turkish officials.” This proves exactly the assumptions people were making earlier about the disturbing disposal of Khashoggi. There have even been reports that the pieces of his body were dissolved in acid in order to leave no evidence.
As for the United States and Saudi Arabian ties are quite complicated now because of this murder. A lot of pressure has been put on President Trump to cut ties with Saudi Arabia, however then the United States would be losing out on having an ally in the Middle East with which the United States uses to its advantage to having troops on the ground, keeping an eye on various areas of the territory. The US would also be losing out on, of course resources such as oil.
