A recent cross-border attack made by Ethiopia’s military brough many casualties among the Sudanese army. This aggressive move on Ethiopia’s part could cause a major strain on the relations between the two bordering countries. Prior to this attack, fighting between the federal and regional forces of Ethiopia had sent approximately 52,000 Ethiopian refugees into Sudan, adding to the already prevalent economic and security issues faced by Sudan. Ethiopia and Sudan had already been having border disputes that were being discussed between the leaders of the two countries, but with little progress made. Currently, Sudan is in a transitional period for their government, which is no longer tolerating the border disputes that had occurred in the past; causing the situation to escalate.

With a changing government in Sudan, I believe it is important for them to stand up for themselves against Ethiopia in this situation because Ethiopia has escalated the situation. It is important at this time for Sudan to either strike back or the two leaders need to come to a consensus through discussion on where each of them stand. Due to the unstable environments in both countries, it is more likely for them to continue to each take blows at each other, causing the situation to expand on more of a global scale.

The issues between Ethiopia and Sudan can be explained through the constructivist theory. By focusing on the individual and communal identities of the two, it is easier to understand why the two are misaligned right now. With Ethiopia facing internal struggles on both the federal and regional level, there is a higher likelihood for their internalized struggles to be turned around on bordering countries. As a border country, Sudan is also facing its own issues with a changing government and economic troubles. They are each facing their own different problems, making it hard for them to align at this time.
