While in exile in Saudi Arabia, Yemen’s president has announced that he will reshuffle the Cabinet in order to stop the rift that has formed between Yemen’s internationally recognized government and a group of separatists backed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This reshuffle is planning to bring women back into Yemen’s Cabinet for the first time since the 1990s. A representative in the UN says that this change will be a step in the right direction in order to restore peace in Yemen. The group of separatists are based in Southern Yemen, and the reason for their involvement in the rift is the lack of representation that they have had in Yemen ever since the unification of Yemen in 1990.

With a change in representation in the Cabinet of Yemen’s government, I believe that the rift between the separatists and Yemen’s government will begin to be bridged. By unifying as a country they will also most likely be able to gain the United Arab Emirates as allies to the country as a whole, rather than just the separatist group. I believe it is definitely in the interest of the Yemen’s government to do whatever they can to fix their relationship with the southern separatists in order to become a more stable and dependable country within their region.

This is an issue that can be resolved through the liberalist theory. By looking out for the long-term prosperity of the country and seeing each party as equal members of Yemen’s society, the rift will be able to be repaired. Yemen’s government has already taken the necessary steps to reach this goal by reshuffling its Cabinet. Now it is about accepting one another in society and coming to work together to find trust, rather than focusing on each of their individual differences.
