Ethiopia is under great pressure to show the events of the crisis in Tigray, which has been hidden via imprisoning journalists and killing civilians. Both the associated press and amnesty international exposed the killing of 800+ people in the city of Axum. There is concern that the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who had previously won a Nobel Prize for making peace with Eritrea, is now in league with them. Eritrea responded to the story on Axum calling it ‘outrageous lies’. Many other cities are believed to have also been decimated according to witness reports, including Denegelat. A UN human rights chief confirms her office has corroborated this information on mass killings in both cities, and urges that victims not be denied their voice and right for justice. Reporters are restricted in the region, and operate there ‘at their own peril’. People are believed to be starting to starve to death. Aid workers report that 80% of the region has been dubbed unreachable, leading thousands of people to be sent into starvation very soon if their outreach does not improve.
I very much hope that the situation improves and the red cross is able to reach areas in need of support. I feel like the only way to have the UN and allied countries take action is for Ethiopia to lift the ban on reporting in the area, so that countries are able to confirm the massacre. With the details of the events still in the dark, it makes it difficult for countries to make a sound decision based on the facts presented to them.
