Ten rockets have hit a US coalition base in the Al Asad base in western Iraq. The US department of defense confirmed the death of a US contractor killed by a heart attack in the midst of the rocket attacks. This comes in addition to one contractor killed and one injured last month due to rocket attacks as well. United State officials believe that the attacks come at the hands of Iran-backed Shia militias. The United States has troops stationed in Iraq in order to combat the Islamic State’s presence. The Department of Defense also mentioned that they do not have a full picture of the damage at this point. It is plausible that these attacks are reactionary events by the Shia militias to express their distaste for american involvement in the region. When reading this article I thought about the United State’s continuation of Liberal Hegemony. Though the Biden administration was thought to be a step away from that form of foreign policy, that has been proven not to be the case. The past few months have continued the pattern of involvement in the middle east. I do not believe that any success is going to be achieved through the United State’s constant interference. The Shia militias haven’t shown any signs of halting their air strikes and rocket attacks on US troop stationed bases. It seems like the United State’s administration is also hesitant to redact out of the middle east despite the reasoning for their initial insertion seems to have faded. Though it is sad to see conflict and terrorism, the time for the United States to play hero has passed. I cannot imagine that US troops stationed discourages conflict in any way, it has and continues to spurr it on. Ultimately, I think that attacks like this are bound to occur until the US takes their leave.
