Biden chose to send Senator Chris Coons in order to carefully communicate with Prime minister Abiy Ahmed to discuss the thousands that have been killed due to the conflict between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray region. Additionally, the neighboring Eritrea nation has been accused of sending troops to help the Ethiopian cause. Biden and the administration have promised fifty-two million more in aid with the clause that Eritrean and Ethiopian troops must be removed from the northern region. Furthermore, there must be an improvement to the humanitarian situation with thousands killed and millions forced to leave their homes during the conflict. There has been raised concern about the conflict from the United Nations as well as the US Secretary of State claiming that ethnic cleansing has been taking place. These accusations have been adamantly denied by the Ethiopian government. As a result of the conflict, the United States are not only sending representatives but also communicating with the African Union. I think that this is a good example of the United States helping within the bounds of their own national interests. I don’t believe that their involvement is only a result of the concern of a humanitarian crisis. Due to Ethiopia and Eritrea prime locations on the Horn of Africa, they are valuable regions to keep stable, and the US is doing just that. The United wants to keep the ports around the Red Sea and Indian Ocean open and available, giving them direct sea access to the middle east, a region they are so heavily involved in. Yet another example of the United States following Liberal Hegemony as the Biden administration continues to intervene where their national interests lie whether they are needed or not. In this case, US involvement is beneficial in order to prevent more destruction of life.
