An Israeli soldier opened fire on a man and his wife at a checkpoint in the occupied west bank of Palestine by the Israelis. The man was killed but the wife survived, she suffered bullet fragments that injured her. the wife says that the soldiers told them to stop at the checkpoint and they did. then they told them to countie forward. s they drove forward and that’s when the soldiers opened fire on the car killing the Man and injuring the wife. The case is under investigation by the commander of the Binyamin Regional Brigade. the Palestinians want to establish the west bank but Israel have occupied the area since 1967. There are 500,000 israeli settlers in the west bank and 200 settlements were made.
how this can affect the region is the palestinians could use this to recapture the west bank. They could bring this to the world court and give them reasons that the israelis are mistreating civilians and causing harm to people so they could be forced out of the west bank by the UN. Another outcome is more outcry by Palestinians and they move forcefully to retake over the west bank from the Israelis, if this were to happen then there would be a fight for the territory that would tak the power of the UN to break it up. I think this happened because of the rising tension between these two states. the soldiers were on edge and then probably made a mistake that caused someone to lose their life.
This connects to class because of geopolitics, this is all because of territory that Israel took from Palestinians in the 1960’s. It is less than 100 years ago so it is still fresh in the minds of Palestinians and they want it back so they will take any opportunity they have to get it back.
